Can ₦50,000 Start Poultry in 2026?
A question for all young farmer's in Nigeria.
Yes, but not 100 birds. With ₦50k, you will start small, learn, and grow. This guide is for beginners in Nigeria who want to start at home, not rent a big farm.
With ₦50k, Broiler is better than Layers. Layers need 4-5 months before they lay. Broiler gives you money back in 6-8 weeks.
Let me show you how to share the money.
₦50,000 Breakdown for 15 Broilers (Most Realistic)
This is for raising from Day Old to Market (6 weeks) at home.
1. Chicks: ₦15,000*
15 Day-Old Chicks @ ₦900 - ₦1,100 each = ₦15,000
Buy from reputable hatchery in Benin (Agrited, CHI, or sellers at New Benin Market early morning). Don't buy roadside chicks.
2. Feed: ₦20,000
1 bag of Starter (25kg) = ₦14,000 will carry them for 3 weeks
Then 25kg Finisher for remaining weeks = ₦13,000. But to fit ₦50k, start with 25kg Starter + 10kg Finisher retail. You will add small money later. Many people use Topfeed, Hybrid or Chikun.
Tip: Measure feed, don't pour full plate. Waste is your enemy.
3. Housing & Equipment: ₦5,000 (DIY)
Don't build new house yet. Use one corner of your compound, wooden box or old carton brooder for first 2 weeks.
Buy: 1 small plastic feeder ₦1,500, 1 drinker ₦1,500, 1 100w bulb for heat ₦1,000, wood shavings (free from sawmill at Ikpoba Hill or Egor)
4. Drugs & Vaccine: ₦5,500
Glucose + Multivitamin: ₦1,000
Gumboro + Lasota vaccines: ₦2,500
Antibiotics (e.g. Tylodox): ₦2,000
Buy from Animal Care or Vet shop at Ring Road
5. Emergency/Transport: ₦4,500
Keep this for transport and extra feed if price shift.
Total = ₦50,000*
5 Steps to Start This Weekend
Step 1: Prepare Brooder (Friday)
Clean the corner well, wash with Izal, put dry wood shavings, hang bulb 2 feet high. Test heat overnight.
Step 2: Buy Chicks (Saturday Morning)
Go before 8am. Check: eyes bright, active, no stool stuck to bum. Carry them in ventilated carton.
Step 3: First Water
Give them glucose + multivitamin water for first 3 hours before feed. This is key for survival.
Step 4: Follow Vaccine Timetable
Day 5-7: Gumboro 1st dose
Day 14: Lasota (Newcastle)
Day 18: Gumboro 2nd dose
Day 21: Lasota 2nd dose
Ask the vet shop man to show you how to give via drinking water.
Step 5: Sell Smart
Don't wait for 3kg. In Benin, people buy 1.8kg - 2.2kg for ₦5,500 - ₦6,500 for Sunday stew. Sell from week 5 to avoid feed eating all your profit. Sell to neighbors, WhatsApp, church members.
How Much Profit?
If 13 out of 15 survive (normal for beginner):
13 x ₦5,800 = ₦75,400
Minus ₦50,000 + extra ₦8,000 feed = ₦58,000 cost
Profit = ₦17,400 in 6 weeks + you get free experience + chicken dung for garden.
Small? Yes. But next batch you can do 30 birds from same profit. That is how we grow.
3 Mistakes That Kill ₦50k Farm
1. Buying too many chicks - 15 is enough.
2. Leaving light on 24/7 after 2 weeks - you waste light and cause disease.
3. No litter change - Change wood shavings when wet or ammonia smell go kill them.
Conclusion
Don't wait for ₦500k. Start with ₦50k, learn with 15 birds. The experience is more valuable than the profit.
