Layers vs Broilers in 2026: Which One Will Give You More Money Every Month in Nigeria?

Everyone always asks this question: should I start layers or broilers?"
I have raised both. So today I will tell you the truth - no sugarcoating. Which one will put steady money for your hand every month in 2026?
1. THE MONEY PART - How Fast You Will See Cash
Broilers:

| Broiler |
You put money, you collect in 6-8 weeks. Like you saw in my last post, 100 broilers can give you ₦400k+ profit in 6 weeks. It's fast money. Good if you need quick return for school fees, rent, or Christmas chicken sales.
Layers:

| Layer |
Layers are slow but steady. You will feed them for 4.5 to 5 months with NO egg. Pure expense. That's about ₦650,000 to feed 100 layers from day-old to point-of-lay. Painful.
BUT after 5 months, they start laying for 12-14 months straight. 100 layers will give you 80-90 eggs per day. That's 2.5 to 3 crates daily.
1 crate now in Benin is ₦5,500 - ₦6,000.
So 3 crates x ₦5,800 = ₦17,400 per day. That's ₦522,000 per month gross. Minus feed ₦200k, you can still keep ₦300k+ monthly.
Verdict: Need fast cash? Go broilers. Need monthly salary-like income? Go layers.
2. THE RISK PART
Broilers: Risk is high. One mistake in week 1, you lose 20 birds = ₦16,000 gone. Heat can kill them. If you don't sell at 6 weeks, they will eat your profit.
Layers: Risk is lower after they start laying, but first 5 months is danger zone. If they die at 4 months, you have lost everything. Also egg price can fall.
3. THE CAPITAL - How Much to Start?
In 2026 prices:
100 Broilers: ₦434,000 to raise and sell in 6 weeks (I broke it down in my last post.
100 Layers (Day-old to laying): ₦750,000 - ₦850,000. Because you feed for 5 months.
If you have small money like ₦100k - ₦200k, start with 50 broilers. Don't try layers.
4. WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?*
Choose BROILERS if:
You are a beginner with less than ₦500k
You want fast profit in 2 months
You have market to sell during festive period (December, Easter)
You can handle stress of all-night watch
Choose LAYERS if:
You have at least ₦800k and you are patient
You want steady income every month like salary
You have a permanent small space
You can keep records for 1 year
My Advice as a Farming Dad?
If you are just starting, start with broilers. Use the profit to enter layers. That is what I did. Broilers gave me the quick cash to build my layer pen.
Don't put all your money in one. Many big farmers in Benin do both: Broilers for December rush, Layers for everyday money.
So, what about you? Do you prefer fast money from broilers or slow, steady money from layers? Tell me in the comments, and I will advise you based on your capital.
